Surely sparring is the best training system.?
Surely sparring is the best training system.?
I box and have done a lot of drills but surely rather than pounding on a heavy bag or using a slip rope it would be better to use that time to spar.
Wouldn't that improve everything?
I mean instead of heavy bag drills and such, conditioning is still paramount.
hmm...depends on how serious and how long the sparring session lasts. a heavy bag on the other hand wont give out as u pound away on it.
personally, i find i develop skills (technique, punching form, balance/footing...etc.) in drills. then the sparing helps to learn to use these skills in realtime execution.
ex. practice jabs on heavy bag builds power; jabs on double end bag builds speed and accuracy; speed bags will develop rhythm and that "snap" in ur punch...etc.
then after all that, sparing will help u find out how to make ur jabs hit and where ur open when jabbing. it would also help to learn how to use ur jab to create openings/opportunities or even defend/maintain distance.
had u gone straight into sparing, there may be less power, control/coordination, and u'd be focused on making the punch make contact rather than technique. but after practicing the technique until it becomes second nature, all ur jabs will be correct in form and then its fine to primarily focus on successful contact.
hope this helps, and im not saying sparing dosent develop everything...its just other forms of training develop power, technique, etc more effectively. sparing is meant to develop fighting experience (what u do with these skills when facing an opponent)
