How to stop cats scratching furniture?
Hi all, I hope this question has been asked thousands of times, but could someone give me advice how to stop my Cat Scratching the furniture? It seems to do when you are excited about something, like just before being fed. Our library, carpets and sofas are getting really shredded! Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks!
My cats to my regret, in the past, have almost destroyed my leather Italian branch. They've even scratched the heck out of a panel wooden door had in. When it comes to scratch is something that cats instinctively do for a number of reasons These include: * To remove the dead outer layer of their claws. * To mark their territory, leaving both a visual and odor with scent glands on their paws. * To stretch their bodies and flex their feet and claws. * To work off energy. And despite its many products are out there to "stop" scratching (IE sprays, tapes, etc. ..) In my experience they do not work. For the simple reason that it is instinctive for cats to feel the need to scratch. Fear not, however, as I said that this is something I've struggled and have recently been overcome. THERE IS HOPE FOR YOU, and therefore your cat! 
What you need to do is instead of trying to get not to scratch you need to redirect what is acceptable to zero. What my cats love these positions is the best board you can zero the Walmart store, pets cheaper (eg http://www.walmart.com/catalog/product.d ...). To make it even more effective you can put catnip on the cardboard scrapers and drive them wild man and make them happy. Put these in the rooms where they fear it could scratch something you do not want anything. For example I put mine on the ground floor from my Italian Leather sectional and now do not bother because I'd rather scratch your favorite position zero catnip. This was expressed in the same room as his chair and hopefully it should work. In addition, rewarded with praise and treats when they scratch scratch posts. This will let you know that they are authorized to zero and begin to do more. At first, me the cats get scared when they called designated scratching scratching posts. This is because every time before I was called to scratch (ie, my section) that went into trouble. So I had to love them and praise them when they scratch the right things to let them know what was right and good thing. Now proudly zero before me all the time, but we have not to get near my section. If still the temptation to scratch your furniture beloved even after all this, then just get a spray bottle and fill with water.
