Soft Cat Carriers
best cat carrier for a very long trip?
I have to move from California to N. Y and I'm taking my cat with me in the car, traveling by air is not an option. what's the best soft carrier I can get her ? I want her to be able to move around and have enough space to walk, I kinda don't like hard carriers but if you guys think that'd be best I'll go with that. i want opinions.
Please no answers about what a bad owner I am for taking my cat on the long trip, I don't have the money to pay for a week or two for a cat hotel, move all of my stuff in a U-haul , pay for my own hotels and then come back by plane to pick up the cat, so don't be mean. Do know this is not my choice and she is my family and I won't give her away, that's not an option either. I'll stop at hotels every night and will make sure the hotel allows cats. Thanks
Hard carriers are always better than soft - more secure, better airflow, easier to clean if cat vomits in or pees in it - but being such a long trip you might want to try something else so the cat will more comfortable for the long days of driving.
What sort of vehicle are you going to be in and how much room will there be for her? If you have plenty of space you should get her one of the pop up cages where you can have a small litter box, food, water and soft bedding for her. Note, though, that you really need to make sure the zipper is COMPLETELY closed and locked so that it can't be pulled open by your cat. I used a new soft carrier recently on a trip to a cat show recently and one of my cats escaped into my car while I was on I-5. NOT fun and could have turned disastrous. Thankfully she's a very mellow Ragamuffin and just sat there meowing at me from the backseat until I pulled over and got her back in the carrier and clipped the strap hook to the zipper pull.

If you're only going to travel less than 6 hours a day then I would just opt for a sturdy plastic carrier. They're the most secure and definitely the most protection for your cat should you get in an accident. Many of them have a notch at the top so you can thread a seat belt through it. For hotels see if there's La Quinta hotels along your route. Most of them allow pets, they don't charge a fee for the pet and you also get a really great hot free breakfast in their breakfast bar. Whatever you do make sure have a hotel room that has doors to a hallway - not the outdoors. This way if your cat dashes out the door as you enter it it's just a matter of chasing her down the hallway - not the chance of her ending up lost in some strange town.
edit: I can't believe someone said have her "loose in the car" - WTF! The cat can end up distracting while you're driving, under your brake pedal or dashing out the door. I'm sure have enough sense to ignore the idiotic answers!
