Can I do a 10% water change and clean the gravel of my fish tank while it is in the cycle process?
I have3 red wag platies in a 29 gallon tank. This is the second week and I am starting to see poo on the gravels. I was wondering if I could do a water change and gravel vac or should I wait? If I can change the water do I treat the water with water conditioner before I put it back into the tank? Please help
A definite yes. If you're cycling with fish, not doing small water changes through the ammonia and nitrites spikes is pretty cruel. Especially with platys. They are fairly hardy fish, but not the toughest for cycling. You're right on track with 10-15% water changes and yes, make sure you use conditioner in water you replace in the tank (also make sure it's at the same temp). Doing small water changes throughout the cycle will keep the ammonia and nitrites a little lower and put less stress on the fish. The worst its going to do is slow down the process, but don't worry about it. Be sure not to overfeed and keep an eye on the water parameters and do not add fish until the cycle has completed. When you see 0 ammonia and nitrites, your nitrates will be high and you know that the cycle is complete. Make sure at the end of the cycle you do a big (40%) water change to lower the nitrates and you'll have a good, healthy tank. Hope this helps.
