Pom Cat Toy
Would you suggest a toy pom for a pet?
Any advice for anyone looking to get a toy pom as a pet? Are they good pets? Do they need lots of attention? Will they bark alot if left at home during the day? Do they suffer from any medical conditions. Will they cope with staying at a pet hotel if I travel and cant take it with? Can they be potty trained i.e. on a sandtray like cats?
First off there is no "standard pom" "teacup poms" or "toy poms" poms are toy breeds period and they range in size from 3-7 pounds.
I think poms are great pets, they are confident, lively and friendly dogs and very smart. Since they are smart, you have to train them or else they will get out of control.
My pom is fine when left alone for hours at a time (I've tested this) but he knows that I will always come back. You have to work up to being gone for hours at a time. (you can do this over a weekend) If you don't show that leaving isn't a big deal then he will cry when you leave him/her alone.
Pom puppies are susceptible to hypoglycemia if they aren't fed on regular intervals and this can be fatal. So if you don't have time to feed your puppy I wouldn't get one because you could be setting yourself up for heartbreak. (another alternative is free feeding, but that makes it hard to housetrain) As adults you can feed them twice a day and be ok. My 3 1/2lb pom eats twice a day. Wtih treats inbetween while training.
Collasping trachea is a problem with poms so harnesses are a great idea for walking so you don't put pressure on their throats.
I'm sure a pom would love being in a pet hotel over a kennel when you can't be around. Be sure to stress that your dog can only play with other small dogs. (that does NOT mean a 25lb can play roughly with your pom, small means under 12lbs)
Finally yes poms can be trained on trays but if he/she doesn't take to the litter you may have to use pads.
