Little Wizard Stories Oz is a set of six stories written for children of L. Frank Baum, author of the Oz books. The six stories were published separately in small booklets, "in Miniature Oz books, in 1913, then in a complete edition in 1914. Each booklet was 29 pages and printed in blue ink instead of black.
The stories were part of a project, and its editor Baum Reilly & Britton, to revitalize and continue the series of Oz books, Baum had written so far. The actual story collection is fifteenth Oz book by Baum.
Baum had tried to end the Oz series with the sixth book, The Emerald City of Oz (1910), in the last chapter of this book that cordoned off the Land of Oz from the outside world. Started a new series of books with the Sea Fairies (1911) and Sky Island (1912). Furthermore, reacted to its 1911 bankruptcy by increasing their production literary books that came five years, the highest production since 1907. Baum tried to launch two novel series Youth in 1911, with the twins Daring, launched under its own name, and the girl flying under its "Edith Van Dyne" pseudonym.
Unfortunately, none of the new series was so successful as the previous Baum and Van Dyne series of Oz books and nieces Aunt Jane. disappointing sales through 1911 and 1912 convinced Baum Reilly & Britton that the return to Oz was necessary. Baum wrote The Patchwork Girl of Oz in a statement in 1913, and in the same year he published his publisher Little Wizard stories six brochures individual (price, $ 0.15 each). The aim was to reach younger readers first, and create in them a greater interest in the Oz canon, as part of a promotion "By L. Frank Baum and all his books."
The six stories in the Little Wizard stories are:
"The Cowardly Lion and the Hungry Tiger"
"Little Dorothy and Toto"
"TikTok and the Nome King"
"Ozma and the Little Wizard"
"Jack Pumpkinhead and the Easel"
"The Scarecrow and the Tin Woodman"
The stories have a charm and simplicity that is appropriate for your target audience. In the first selection, the Cowardly Lion and the Hungry Tiger frustrated by his throne protection routine tame Ozma in the Emerald City, they decided to go out and fulfill their desires dark. The Lion wants to attack a man and to "chop suey him." El Tigre longs to satisfy his appetite long denied to fat babies. In the end, both discovered that cats can not bring themselves to hurt anyone.
(The story of "Little Dorothy and Toto" contains a curious feature. The Assistant plays a joke Dorothy to teach "it's really dangerous for a girl to walk alone in a fairyland." This precaution is very different from the spirit independent shows Dorothy in The Wizard of Oz, Baum and seems to encourage the entire Oz series. It seems clear that Baum was thinking about younger readers when he wrote this story.)
The strategy to reach readers beginning was successful enough to Reilly and Britton to repeat in a few years. The editorial teams L. Minor Speaker Frank Baum (1910) in six small books called Tales Snuggle in 191,617, and again as the Oz-Man Tales in 1920.
Four of the Little Stories Wizard was reissued in 1932 in a new way, as the booklets Oz Oz Jig Saw Puzzle. A year or two later the four stories were released again as part of promotion of a radio show Wizard of Oz (sponsored by Jell-O). Rand McNally published the six stories in three booklets in 1939.
