military basic pay uses time in grade or length of service?

i signed on the dotted line at barely 17 and that was a long time ago. i also only got promoted to E3 so i can't remember if military base pay is determined by time in grade (for example: 4 years as an E6) or length of service (for example: E6 with 10 years of service).
when i say a long time ago, i mean that i have been out since the early 90's. hard to remember some things from that far back.

Military pay is based upon pay date. That is the date you raised your hand and said, "I do swear to defend the Constitution of the USA....." You probably did that at the recruiter's office and the date is recorded on your entry form. Even if you did not go into the service for six months, that is still the date that your pay time is calculated from. That date is ONLY used for pay, it does not count for time in grade so does not effect your promotion cycle nor does it count for retirement calculation nor for time in service.

If the date does not match up, you need to take your recruitment paperwork to pay and finance and show them the date.
