Feline Obesity

All cat owners should know if your cat is obese, what problems are associated with obesity, what causes obesity and how to fix the problem.

So how I can tell if my cat is obese?

Obesity is commonly defined as more than 20% above ideal weight. The way in determining the ideal weight, however, is not always cut and dry. Unlike humans, who have body mass index and several letters guide them, there is a table set of acceptable weights for cats due to large variations between different races. The Maine Coon will be much heavier than a Siamese. For this reason, obesity in cats is determined by body condition score. Body condition score usually ranges from 1 to 9 5 being ideal and 9 being grossly overweight.

So how can you tell if your cat is too fat? Feel the sides. Can you feel the ribs? A some fat cover is ideal. You should be able to feel his ribs if you put a little pressure on the sides, but should not be able to tell just by running of your hand on your body. Look at it while standing above him. Can you see his waist? Yes, cats should have a waist. Look on the bright side. Do you see her getting belly in a little? Should not wobble in the breeze (in neutered animals, a small bag of loose skin is normal.)

For longhaired cats, can be useful to moisturize your skin in the bathtub to judge their body condition. All that the skin can give the illusion that the cat is much heavier than it really is, or provide a great excuse for the owner of why your cat looks fat.
(See the following links in this article for an illustrated chart to help you.)

So he's fat. Is it so dangerous?

The short answer: YES.

The long answer: a list of known risks. Obese cats have a much higher risk of developing:

* Diabetes mellitus (sugar Diabetes)
* Hepatic lipidosis / FLS (a form of liver disease)
* Arthritis or other bone problems
* Lower urinary tract disease ('cystitis)
* Breathing difficulties
* Heart failure
* Kidney Disease
* Problems with anesthesia
* Surgical complications

But do not eat much ...

Being overweight is eating more calories your body needs. If your cat is neutered, which uses less calories. If it is a barn cat, which uses more calories. The more active, more calories you need. Most of us have indoor cats that was in much of the time. Not using energy to stay warm, it is not hunting for food. You do not need a big bowl of food laying around to eat 24 hours a day.

When the diet of humans, often recommended keep a food diary because you lose track of how much we are really eating. You can lose track of how much your cat is really eating if you free food mix is dry it several times a day. Be more aware of what you're feeding him and remember that an animal that weighs 12 pounds is not necessary to eat so much. Nor is believed who do not love you more if you stop pulling it every time you think about being nice. If you want to show your love, play with it. Give him some catnip. Spend time interacting with him. Not to equate food with love.

Get the weight

If your cat is more than a little overweight, the first thing you need to do is an appointment with your veterinarian. There are some medical reasons for severe obesity that requires veterinary care to fix. Barring a medical problem that causes the disease, veterinarian must monitor the health of your cat as restricting fat calories. A strict diet can be deadly to obese cats. Do not just drastically reduce their food and I hope that the weight melts. Obese cats who are suddenly deprived of food are prone to fatty liver syndrome, which can be fatal if not treated. Weight loss should be a gradual process - the natural result of a healthy diet and active life.

Most cats are not as extremely obese that need attention care to monitor your weight loss. Most are simply the result of a healthy lifestyle where they consume too many calories, are too inactive and eat the wrong kinds of food (more or less like overweight people). Addressing these problems will result in reducing weight gradually to a good number. Try these tips.

* Buy premium food. Many inexpensive brands do not use quality ingredients and the use of fillers too. Nutrients are not as digestible, thus are not bioavailable (they just passed through the system). The cat eats more to compensate.

* Feed meals in portions at regular meals. The cats eat out of boredom, just like people. They can also compete for food in a multi-Cat Home. Feeding the portion recommended on the package food, dividing into two or three meals a day (unless a medical condition that requires a different feeding schedule). Separate your cats in your multiple cats home if necessary. Leave the food down for 30-40 minutes, then take up. You eat meals at mealtime. So can your cat.

* Feed wet food in addition to or instead of dry. Cats are for eating meat. Dry foods tend to have too many carbohydrates (not very digestible) and not enough water and protein. The wet food, rich in protein and fat, satisfies the cat's hunger better and more efficiently used by the body. If your cat likes wet food, feed the wet only. If she is not so crazy about it, give half of their calories as dry and half wet. If you're starting, although a quarter of their calories from wet food is a start.

* Avoid sweets. Food should not be equated with love. Once your cat has been reduced to a healthy weight, an occasional treat is fine, but until then, try using praise, playtime, catnip, and other rewards to show how much you enjoy your partner.

* Integrate activities other than eating into the routine. Your cat is made to be an active being - they hunted for food, competed for territory, stayed safe from predators, stayed warm in the winter, cool in summer, away from the assistants, and raised young. Now that Cats are kept as pets indoors, they need activities that are provided for them. Get some interactive and automated toys for your cat. Play chase with it - making chase you from one room to another by dragging a cat toy behind you. Get a big Cat Tree and hide interesting things such as catnip pieces in it, especially towards the top where you have to climb to get to. Plant a little container of Cat Grass and secure the superior. Be creative, but get your thinking and moving. Playing with your cat reduces stress levels - for both!

Keep the weight

Do not allow that once your cat can jump really lazy on the couch without effort. A healthy weight is all about lifestyle. Keep the diet, do not start feeding is a lot of extras, and maintain activity levels. Spend a little time to get your cat to a healthy weight will help your cat live a longer and happy.
