How To Train Your Cat To Use The Litter Box
How to train your cat to use the litter box will take some time, effort, and patience on your part. Cats are not born on how to use the litter box when you bring them home. This is where you come in. Some cats will be quick learners and some will be a little more difficult. However, over time they will learn to go potty using the litter box.
The Litter Box Location
You must determine where your cat will be going potty. You must place the litter box where you want her to do her duty. When you bring home your new kitten and notice her nosing around the corners of your home, put her in the litter box. Gently scratch her front paws in the litter box so she realizes that this is the place to deposit and cover waste. If your cat should have an accident, clean up the mess with a paper towel and place the paper towel in the litter box. Place her in the litter box and scratch her front paws to reinforce that this is the place where waste belongs.
Do not punish your cat for having an accident. This will only make it more difficult for you to help her learn to use the litter box and she may fear you. When your cat begins to show the proper behavior give her some verbal praise and her favorite treat. Continue to praise her as she uses the litter box. Over time, she will just go there on her own naturally.
Litter Box Behavior
- Your cat is fastidious and can be fussy about their litter box, its cleanliness, and the type of litter being used. You must keep the litter box clean and comfortable for your pet.
- Choosing a litter box is also important. A kitten may not want to use one that she will be using when she becomes an adult cat. So small the better. Chose one made of plastic for easy cleaning with soap and warm water to prevent odors from being absorbed by the box. Cats by nature are clean animals. Any smell of an odor will prevent them from using the litter box.
- Types of filler. The basic core ingredient of common fillers is clay which is naturally absorbent. Clay does provide some odor control, by adding additional ingredients you can control the growth of odor-causing bacteria and to diminish dust.
Time-release agents can control odor longer between litter changes.
- Scooping fillers offer moisture-activated clumping action, so waste can be isolated and scooped out, leaving behind clean litter.
- Crystal-type fillers are considered state-of-the-art in litter. This technology keeps the litter box dry and fresh for a long time, which means less work for you. Stirring regularly allows you to go up to 30 days between changes (one cat).
- Paper fillers are recommended by veterinarians for post-surgical use. These fillers are 3 times more moisture absorbent than clay and 99.7% dust free.
Select the filler that best fits your situation and budget.
Switching Fillers
Sometimes, you may have to switch fillers based upon your cat's response with the current filler. You will need to ease your cat into the new brand slowly. Begin by mixing 1/3 of the new brand with 2/3 of the old. Then, gradually increase the new and decrease the old brand until your cat becomes used to it.
How Much Filler Should I Use?
The amount of filler will vary by type purchased. See below:
- Conventional: Maintain a depth of 2-3 inches
- Scoop: Maintain a depth of 3-4 inches
- Crystals: Maintain a depth of 1.5 inches.
Cleaning The Litter Box
This is very important step so that your cat will continue to use the litter box. If not, you will see lots of accidents around your house.
- Conventional: Remove waste daily. Maintain filler depth of 2-3 inches for pawing and covering. Clean box with warm water and a mild detergent between complete litter changes.
- Scoop: Remove waste areas daily. Add more filler as needed to maintain 3-4 inch depth. Clean the box between complete litter changes with warm water and a mild detergent.
- Crystals: Scoop out and discard dehydrated solid waste daily. Use the scooper to thoroughly stir crystals daily, which will distribute liquid waste, speed evaporation and increase the life of the product. Clean the box with warm water and a mild detergent between complete litter changes.
By following the above steps, you will become a pro at training your cat to use the litter box and not your floor.
