Why did my cat spray a huge amount, after not spraying for so long?
My cat had some urinary problems & I took him to the vet. Now, after not spraying his male stuff for so long, I just watched him spray, but it was a LARGE amount. Has the issue with his urinary tract just been resolved, and that is why he sprayed so much? Or is there something I should be aware of medically? Any advice or information is welcome, thank you.
I could be wrong, but I get the feeling a little clarification may be in order. When a cat sprays, it's on vertical surfaces with the tail raised. Normally, it is only a few squirts. Spraying is a way of marking territory.
If you mean that he urinated in his litter box (or in an inappropriate location), it may be that the ordeal left his bladder slightly stretched. My male had a severe case of struvite crystals and was blocked for the better part of a week, despite being catheterized three times. After what was basically a sex change, he is now able to urinate without a problem. The boy makes puddles.
If what you witnessed was the latter, keep an eye on him to make sure he's not showing signs of trouble while urinating. In any event, it can't hurt to call the vet and ask a few questions. If s/he says what you're seeing is not unusual after the medical problem your kitty had, all is probably fine if he's behaving normally otherwise.
