If you give a cat plenty of better surfaces to scratch, it will be more likely to scratch those surfaces instead of your furniture. A good scratching post or a Cat Tree are made of materials that are much better for the cats than most furniture. Having more than one scratching post conveniently located around the house can make the cat more likely to use the post instead of something else. If the cat suddenly feels the urge to scratch but the post is in another room or across the house, it might choose a nearby piece of furniture to scratch. But if a better surface is nearby and convenient to the cat, it will probably use it instead of scratching your furniture.
Giving a cat plenty of other things to scratch is not always a 100% solution for a cat scratching furniture problem, but in many cases it does solve the problem. Even if it doesn't completely stop the problem, it will certainly help.
