We have a full blooded siamese blue seal point kitten that is 4 and half months. I live in an apartment,?
what toys, furniture toys (elaborate scratchers and climbers), or games can I play with him to make sure he doesn't get bored? Just want to give him the best and not waste. Out of all I have bought, his favorite toy is a straw. Just learning with cats, had much experience with dogs, and my love for the siamese breed is now dedicated.
There are only three toys I would pay money for after 25yrs of cat ownership, since as you have noted most cats prefer to scrounge up their own. 1) Cat Play Cubes ($10 at Target or on Amazon.com) -- more durable than cardboard boxes and easier for them to move around than paper shopping bags 2) 79cent krinkle ball of some kind (only requirement is that it be light) 3) catnip/feather toy of some kind (please no catnip till fullgrown though). Most jingle-bell toys are too heavy to appeal, and stay away from anything that is brightly colored with sewn on eyes/tails/etc since that is just marketing to the human. Nine times out of ten, commercial Cat Toys are too heavy to be entertaining to a cat -- a good rule of thumb is to weigh the toy in your palm, and if you feel it then it is too heavy. A super-bounce ball or ping-pong ball [placed in a bathtub] are generally fun, and yes it is normal for some cats to fetch (but not as a command!). I admit to investing in the catnip bubbles, but only 1 of my cats enjoyed them. Cats like to watch you "hide" their toys under rugs or behind sofas or under tablecloths -- anywhere where they can pretend to fish them out. I usually set up some of these games before leaving for work each day. Some also like you to hide treats for them to find. They do absolutely love to climb up high and jump, but it you have several well-placed shelves or bookcases then a cat-tree is not strictly necessary. If your cat will be keeping its claws, then do pay good money for a -tall- sissal scratching post and also for at least one of the cardboard scratchers -- put these in a well-traficked room of the house (not out of the way). Most scratching posts are too short or tip over, so be a choosy shopper. As for games, nearly all cats like to "lay in wait" for an unsuspecting string/toy to be dragged past them. Try to drag the string away from them though (so it will be interesting) and they are always fascinated when an object goes partially out of sight. They seem to find humans juggling amusing too, if you are desperate. Set aside a dedicated play-time each day -- your cats will look forward to it -- as you would with a dog; cats like schedules as much as dogs do.
