What is the best way to Ferret proof your home and well as cover up cords?
I have 2 ferrets who like ferrets love to roam the home. Well my youngest just bit a power cord the other night and shocke dhimself pretty good. He is luckley still alive. so I was wondering what is the best way to resolve the ferret near death experiances to stop.
Yes - ferrets love to roam homes but if rooms can't be made completely safe for them - don't only access into those rooms. In 10 years of owning ferrets I've never had one that bit a cord. How young is this ferret? If I've had a ferret that was a kit I generally didn't allow them down on the floor until they were several months old. Kits are very mouthy so they'll bite things older ferrets wouldn't and their dimunitive size makes them prone to more injuries such as getting into spaces the bigger ferrets can't or getting stepped on - by yourself or by larger housepets.
There's cord covers that you can find at most office supply stores. If you have an IKEA by you they have tubing as well that slips over cords. Safer yet is what the other people mentioned - don't allow the ferrets access to every room in your home. Give them a room or two that you can completely ferret proof and don't take chances. Mine have a clear plexi gate that keeps them out of the kitchen, bathroom and utility room.
As for ferret proofing in general bear in mind that if a ferret can fit it's head through a space, it's body will fit through as well. Get down on the floor and reach under kitchen cabinets - there's often "out of sight/out of mind" gaps left there by carpenters that you'll need to cover with small pieces of wood and some wood glue. Match sure all kitchen cabinets have secure latches on them. Make sure there's no access under the fridge, under the stove, under the refrigerator. The kitchen is one room that's particularly dangerous to ferrets. Not only due to all of the appliances and cabinets but just having them underfoot while your cooking could turn into a tragedy - or at least a big mess. In my opinion it's best to block their access to the kitchen entirely.
Same with the utility/laundry room. I know of someone who recently accidentally tossed their ferret in the dryer. This ferret ended up surviving but was seriously injured. There's also the dryer tube. They look just like the ones we give our ferrets to play with so if a ferret was to pull this off your dryer and climb through it - he'd end up escaping outside.
Watch your ferret closely when you let it out in any rooms. Are there places he can can climb to because you've got a low shelf next to a cabinet? And are there heavy items on that cabinet that he could knock over onto someone else? I know someone whose ferret died when the other ferret knocked a large camcorder off a desk. It landed on the other ferret's head. Owning ferrets is like owning two year olds. Two year olds that are immensely more curious and that curiousity can often get them into trouble. You really need to watch them like a hawk to discover hazards you didn't even realize were there. Another tip I always tell ferret owners is do a "ferret roundup" occasionally. I like to go around my house gathering everyone up and putting them back in the cage once they've gone off to sleep. Not only does this give me the piece of mind of knowing everyone's safe, but when everyone wakes up they'll be right where the litterbox is!
