Feline Vomit

Question for people who actually know feline medical stuff?
My cat has been vomiting more often, and I had chalked it up to the fact that it's summer, he's shedding, and I'm not brushing him enough. But I don't seem to be finding any hairballs in his vomit. He's going to the bathroom normally, he's as playful as ever, and he's just all around normal for him. He's 3 years old. Is it cause for concern if he's throwing up for a total of about 4 or 5 times so far since spring started, but his actions haven't changed a bit?
If it is just 4-5 times since Spring, that is hardly nothing. It could be hairballs. They don't have to be in the vomit; just blocking the passage of the food. It later gets unblocked as the hair mat passes into the digestive system.
If he is a short haired cat, combing with a flea comb is a good way to remove lots of loose fur. If a longer haired cat, a brush with prongs on one side is good for removing undercoat, and the brush side for surface fur. Often, when one starts, things seem to get worse but it soon levels off.
Hairball medicines are actually flavored greases to ease the passage of the hair through your cat's system.
Another reason for upchucking is eating too fast. My rule of thumb is that the faster it goes down, the quicker it comes up.
