Exotic Pets - Making The Right Decision

Most families at some point decide to introduce a pet or animal to their family home at some point in their lives. Although cats, dogs, rabbits, gerbils, fish and other small animals are the most common family pet it is becoming less unusual for families to look at bringing home exotic pets.

Exotic pets may seem more exciting and different however unless your are fully prepared and understand enough about the exotic pets you choose bringing one home could end in disaster.

Generally speaking, the more exotic the pet the more education you will need and it will probably require more expensive housing and food. When you are looking for exotic pets do your research before you shop, you may find you purchase an animal on impulse that you know little about and does not fit your family surroundings.

It is extremely important to do plenty of research on exotic pets before you decide what sort you want. You can find plenty of information on the internet simply type in the animal you are look for and read as much as you can to see if this animal suits you. You can also visit your local library and borrow books on exotic pets.

It may be helpful to visit a few pet shops to seek advise about exotic pets, make sure you are aware of all the special requirements they need.

Things To Ask
What sort of housing do they require including the size and shape.
What sort of food do they eat and how often should they be fed
Are they prone to any type of diseases or problems you should look out for
Do they require any special equipment such as a UV light or heat mat
How long is their life expectancy
Do they need any type of vaccinations
Do you need any sort of licence to own this type of animal

If you have children it may be worth finding out how much your exotic pet likes to be interacted with. If you have chosen an animal that does not like to be handled will your family be happy with a pet that can only be looked at and not touched?

If you have other pets already you will need to know if the new addition will upset your existing animals and how they will get along. You may need to set up alternative measures if they need to be kept well away from each other.

Buying exotic pets is not as easy as it seems but if you are fully aware of everything that it needs and have prepared a loving home with the correct facilities there is no reason why you should not enjoy having one.

How To Buy insurance For Your Exotic Pet

What is an exotic pet? Well from an insurers point of view, it can vary. However, as a general rule of thumb it will often refer to any animal that requires insurance other than a cat or dog, or a horse (which is usually covered by specific equine insurance policies). Some other common pets such as a gerbil or goldfish won't be classed as exotic pets, but it's very rare that an owner would consider it worth insuring these pets.

What is special about exotic pets when it comes to insurance?

Like all insurance, pet policies are based on risk. Therefore, there are several reasons why the potential payouts, and thus the premiums, may be higher with exotic pets. These include the following:

High-value pets such as rare birds or reptiles are potentially at a greater risk of being stolen. If you have a policy which pays for replacing the pet, the payout will also be higher in these cases.
It's also more likely that you will be able to get insurance against a high-value pet dying and receive a payment for replacement costs. It's usually harder to find this type of cover for a dog or cat as there is a much wider disparity between the financial cost of replacing such a pet and the sentimental value the owner places on their death.
Less common animals may require more specialist treatment from vets which can be more expensive.
Rarer pets often require specialist care by owners and some insurers may take account of the risk that you won't have the knowledge to provide this.
Liability if your pet injures property or another person may vary. Clearly a dog is probably more likely to attack a human, but another animal may cause more damage if they do, for example if they carry rare diseases.

What similarities are there with more common pet insurance policies?

Although there are some significant differences, some issues remain the same with all types of pet insurance. A major one is the duration of the policy. Some policies only cover up to a certain financial limit each year, regardless of the claims. Others limit claims for a single condition to a particular time such as a year, meaning you'll only ever get payouts for a year after diagnosis, even for a long-term condition such as diabetes. Some policies allow the insurer to make an annual decision about renewing or cancelling the policy, while others guarantee you can renew every year, but may have an upper limit on the pet's age.

Should owners use a specialist exotic pet insurance company?

There are certainly some good reasons to consider a specialist exotic pet insurer. For example, they may be able to offer better premiums as they have a clearer understanding of the risks and potential payouts involved with a particular pet. They may also be better placed to handle a claim and may even be able to help find a vet who is particularly qualified for your exotic pet. However, these advantages shouldn't deter you from shopping around and including quotes from general pet insurers to see if you can get a better deal.
