Has anyone had a cat develop FLUTD while on a raw food diet?
Hi guys, My 1.5 year old neutered male cat started effort and production of small amounts of blood in the morning urine. He has been eating variety of foods from the organic nature of raw chicken since I was a kitten and has a Drinkwell Platinum fountain. I took him to the vet and among other things, she prescribed Royal Canin SO (bags). I'm not a big fan of prescription diets, but I want my child to be healthy. Royal Canin diet of statement did not look as bad as Hill C / D diet, ingredient wise. Anyway, I noticed that many people recommend pet owners to switch to a canned food quality rather than a prescription diet and many people have had success with this. But what about my kitten? Has anyone fed a diet of high quality raw or preserved and still had urinary tract problems? I'm pretty pissed that my child not feeling well, despite my best efforts to prevent any disease. Thoughts, advice, comments, criticisms, please?
IU to have cured raw but I can not say I've seen a UI development, while raw. I personally have never fed Natures Variety raw, but I think it says it is high in amount of bone that may or may not be true, and that may or may not instigate a urinary tract infection. It's hard to say because even rough, remains comerially manufactuered. Can you try to switch to a home made raw comtol content. I use the recipe catinfo.org but if you want to grind the bones that could only be changed to something like www.felinefuture.com and add the powder to the meat and liver. My beloved cat stuff. Hard to say ... but no matter what ... I stay away from any food perscription and treat raw or canned options first. That of course is just my opinion. Here are some suggestions for you my standard advice file. Been there, done that. :. O (I have two men who almost lost to FLUTD, struvite crystals, bladder and kidney stones I managed to cure both naturally (With the help of my vet) by feeding a species appropriate diet and the addition of raw foods on a regimen of natural supplements. My biggest advice is if your vet recommends that you use a "prescription diet" food ... choose to ignore this route and go for a steady diet of wet food, canned or raw, instead. Vets that prescribe dry prescription foods (oh!) And even canned prescription diets as the cure for urinary tract problems, obviously know nothing about feline nutrition and only bandaiding the problem instead of preventing it in the first place. Unfortunately, most vets never learn anything about feline nutrition except what the Cat Food companies teach them when they sell their products. Any vet who would tell you to put your cat already sick in a food made with cheap fillers garbage as Hill's Science Diet Prescription, Royal Canin, Purina or clearly knows nothing about cats nutritional needs Cats were never designed to eat dry food. NEVER. They eat their prey whole and wet and not have a thirst mechanism. Because ... cats are designed to eat only wet food. We idiot humans feed dry only for our convenience. They do not drink enough water on a dry diet and so their systems do not fully rinse so they get UTI issues. Therefore, we, for dry food are often the direct cause of all UTI issues in cats. Shows how much used to know, eh? What you need to do is unconcentrate cat urine so that crystals do not have time to train and properly wash system, because it was designed to do. To do this you need to stop feeding all dry foods and switch to a diet of wet stricktly. Either high quality canned or raw diet. Not cheap, but it will cost less in the long run than the vet. You can learn about raw foods www.catinfo.org or choose a high quality grain free canned food. No more dry cat food ever. Wet food only! I have also had personal success with Glucosamine and Chrondriton to prevent inflammation in the urethra. Talk to your veterinarian. There are some major feline studies being done on this that are very promising! If your kittys urine needs more acidity because of Struvite Crystals can add dry cranberry, a pinch 2X a day on wet food. And you can try a bit of Vitamin C sprinkled on as well. Give your kitty water distilled drinking only. Both my vet and I are convinced after speaking with vets all over the county that the hardness and mineral content in water in different areas contributes to number of cases of UTI in these areas. From here the water distilled out .... Another suggestion ... is to get kitty a water fountain. I bought the Bigdog Drinkwell for my cats and keep it filled with distilled water and love. It is a good way to encourage consumption of water. Finally, get a trash bag that can scientifically keep track of kittys PH levels at home. You will not be able to detect the crystals in the home that cause blockages, but if the pH was ... you can get kitten a urinalysis right away and possibly avoid an obstruction. Good luck!
