Do you have pet cats? Any good tips on making them happy?

I have two pet cats who are seriously...the perfect contrast. One is very quiet, would only meow when food arrives, while the other meows almost the whole day, which practically, will drive me crazy. When I scare them(holding the newspaper), they scrambled for their lives even though I didn't touch them.

Then, when I call them back after a few moments, the other cat will meow and shriek again, arrgh. I tried ways in making them happy, like buying some toys from the pet store and such, or petting and give them some attention. Unfortunately, each scare I gave them, I could see the fear and wary in their eyes when I try to make up for it later.

Does it make me a bad owner? I fought for the best to keep them - my doctor says I can't keep cats but I love them! I have been keeping cats for 7 years now and it's impossible to give up.

They’re terrified of you. They’ll never be happy with you. You scare them to death. You can’t make up for that. You have to earn a cat’s trust, which you haven’t for either of them . That’s why the one cries all day. Give them t someone who can love them and they can love before the damage is completely irreversible.

Are these older cats or kittens/young adults? If they are younger, their personalities will change a little over time and they will mellow out. If they are older, you have to just accept that they have some quirks that cannot be explained. I have 2 cats too, one is pushy and demanding and not so affectionate 24/7 and the other is submissive, sweet and a total beta-male. Cats have various personalities just like people.

You could try catnip, rescue remedy or feliway (hormomes you spray or plug into a wall that make a cat calm down, as well as not spray).

Keep them indoors when you are not around so they stay safe.

Some cats are a lot jumpier than others and get startled more easily. Don’t blame yourself. Cats have a variety of personalities. They can either be a social butterfly or just completely aloof. Just keep doing what you’re doing and give them some attention. Pet them once in a while or try to slowly lay down with them.

are you scaring them on purpose?
because the one is meowing loudly?
in either case you are obviously doing something to scare them and you know what it is you do that scares them sooo STOP SCARING THEM!! yeah, it makes you a bad owner if you’re doing things that you know scare them…no matter how much you try to make up for it later, cats won’t forget that you scared them (they may feel like they are being abused) even if you’re not doing it on purpose—just stop doing what you know scares them…try letting them be…only pet them when they come to you-don’t chase them down and try to hold them! when they do come to you give them a treat – you can try different types of toys to make them happy-some cats have different tastes–or try a window perch so they can see outside…but for heaven’s sake don’t scare your cats!! that’s common sense!

Cats have different personalities. i have two cats and they are so different to each other. Christina loves to be patted but will not follow me, walk in my way or rub against my legs. She only meows in the mornings when she is really hungry. Bianca on the other hand meows every time she sees me, will follow me wherever go (even when she had a sore paw and was limping), will rub against my legs etc. It is just their personality. Like some people are outgoing and wild and some people are quiet and like to stay at home. Christina also eats only a little and I have to wait until she is hungry again to try and get her to eat again that night while Bianca can eat any time. Christina is so fussy with her food and Bianca will even eat whatever I am eating.

Cats are independent and they will be fine if you give them food and water, dont fuss too much.
