Should I get pet rat????
I want a little critter! a rat seems to be perfect for me. I have to ask my parents, but I want A LOT of info first. I want somthing i could play with, and cuddle up with on the couch. My mom is allergic to fur, will the rat effect her? also , should I get one or two rats? and yes, I know, either 2 boys or 2 girls, never mix them! I kind of only wanted 1, will it be okay on it's own? Do you have any idea on how much it costs to have a rat, including shelter, toys, food, ect.?Please, I need as much info as possible!!!!
Rats are great, affectionate animals. They may not be so cuddly when they are young but when they get older they love to sit in your lap while you rub behind their ears.
I don't think one rat would make a big deal as far as allergies go but then again I don't have allergies to pet fur so I don't know.
You don't have to have more than one but it is recommened since rats are very social animals and love company. but if you only want one then remember to give him extra attention, affection, and out of cage time. Do bonding activities such as take him/her for walks or do training activities.
Depending on your area, the different pet stores, the size of the rats, and the amount of toys, treats, etc you want rats stuff can cost average from $75 to 150 but I would buy a cage online they seem to be better priced and you have more of a selection.
Also when choosing a rat dont just pick the "cute" one. Check for any signs of illnesses. Such as porphyrin (red stuff) around the eyes, nose and on the front paws. Check their fur for lice (little tiny brown bugs). Do they breathe hard? Are they active? You would hate to get a sick rat that would need to go to the vet.
When getting bedding to line the cage check for the least dusty. "Soft sorbent" and "Total comfort" are extremely dusty so dont use those. Carefresh is good. Also if you must use wood chips then stick with aspen and stay away from anything pine or cedar since it can affect their lungs.
Lab blocks are the best type of food since rats only eat certain items out of seed based diets and can get obese.
