Cat Trees And Scratching Posts
Does my cat need a scratching post?
We have a garden kneeler for her to scratch on because when we got them, she was always sharpening her claws on them. I suppose that she would also sharpen her claws on trees and shade cloth outside (I've seen her scratch on the shade cloth). When we got her a scratching post, she didn't scratch on it and it was always falling over when she did. But then again, it wasn't a very strong one. So should we get her a stronger scratching post, or can she stay with sharpening her claws on garden kneelers?
If she is willing to use the garden kneelers and you are ok with her using them then there is no need to buy another scratching post as long as it is not dangerous to your cat. If you do buy a scratching post there is no guarentee that she'll use the new one (or even stop using the garden kneelers). It may be the scent or the texture that makes her prefer these so if you feel that she does need a different place to scratch try to get something of a similar texture and do your best to make the scent similar and remove the old kneelers to an area she cannot get to.
Also make sure you keep an eye on the length of her nails. Cats also need nail trims to prevent the nails from growing around into the paw pads. To check the length of the nail you'll need to extrude the nail out to examine. If you are comfortable with trimming the nails back you can buy nail clippers at a pet store and trim the tip of the nail back, careful not to clip the quick. If you are uncomfortable trimming the nail, then you can take her to a veterinarian to have the nails clipped by a veterinary technician.
