White footed deer mouse in my house?

My cats alerted me to what i thought was just a mouse under the bookshelf. All night me & the cats went back & forth trying to catch it (i would release it). So it goes back in the kitchen & goes back to where it came from. Next day it's back under the bookshelf, i shine a flashlight under the furniture, the mouse has large eyes, is about 1 1/2" long, has white belly & light colored feet, it's fur is redish/brown. I called the vet, they said it was a chipmunk (not) since it had a tail. Could it be a small hamster w/tail? Is this an endangered mouse in North Carolina (i have since bought a have a heart trap), could this have been someone's pet? I read they live in Minnesota? This is NC, far ways to travel for such small feet. Somehow it has found a way in the house through the kitchen. When i catch it, should i release it in the yard? or is it a protected/endangered species? Oh, i live in a normal housing development, no fields nearby. Thx.

Sounds like some type of deer mouse (and just like the ones I find in our barn quite frequently in northeast Ohio). Don't know if it's endangered or not, but deer mice that find their way into your home don't usually intend to. Deer mice are typically not house mice, so your little visitor is probably lost and may have been looking for an easy meal.

Try using the live trap and releasing the mouse in a wooded area or park. If he found his way in, chances are he'll find his way back if you just put him in your yard.
