Cat Fleas - Home Remedies For Cats
This is not the most pleasant question to ask a pet owner, but does your cat have fleas?
Would you like to know about home remedies for cats to bring relief to your pets?
Fleas are all around us. Some communities have excellent environmental sprays to help keep the flea and mosquito population to a minimum.
It helps when individuals and families also refrain from collecting water and/or moisture around or under their houses, sand or gravel around garages, sheds, yards and gardens. Collected water is a breeding nursery for mosquitoes, and the moisture around shrubs is heaven to fleas.
Moisture from water, humidity and warmth or being in a warm climate is flea paradise. Ticks love the woods, shrubs, and high grasses. These three insects are a menace to our pets and us.
When you allow your cat or cats to roam outside where they are exposed to these flea nurseries, mosquito bins and tick hideouts and you do not use insecticides, you will need to check your pets each time they re-enter the house.
The best prevention is not to have these insects get started. Your pet can wear a flea collar, or flea powder, or a flea spray. Our personal pets are guarded with a once a month topical flea and tick control product. Many of these products are available over the counter or prescribed by your vet. Thank Goodness!
A flea comb can be used, but it does not collect many fleas. Fleas do not like soapy water. Shampoo your cat and maintain extra cleanliness and keep your cat indoors.
If the flea infestation should get worse, would you want to see yourself cleaning, vacuuming, spraying and fogging the cat, the house, and the yard for weeks?
Your cat gave you signals of itching, scratching, biting and losing hair as she tried to kill the fleas. The female flea is similar to the mosquito in that they need blood to either produce or feed their young.
Your cat may have sensitive skin or be allergic to the saliva from the fleas. The fleabite can also do the same for a human being. Both cats and human beings will have red irritated skin and itching. Scratching is the worst thing to do as this can cause an infection.
Another insect that we include when talking about fleas is the tick. The tick likes to fasten itself to any warm-blooded animal. The worse for humans is Lyme disease caused by an infected deer tick.
Have you ever seen a tick?
This is one insect that I do not like to handle because of how you need to remove it. Take a pair of tweezers, make sure you have a solid grip on its head, and securely and slowly withdraw the head and body from the pet.
Be very sure that you have withdrawn the entire insect. After removing the tick place it in a container of rubbing alcohol and close the container with a lid.
The cat will have redness and swelling at the bite site. Observe your cat for about a week looking for any signs of fever, loss of appetite, listlessness, stiffness in its movements. Does she appear to have pain or is there leg paralysis?
One of the experiences that I had while working for a vet was to remove ticks on a paralyzed dog. The owners were worried as to how their pet could have been paralyzed so quickly. I removed many ticks from the dog.
When I arrived at work the following day, the vet had me check on this dog immediately to see what happens when you remove ticks. Well, that dog was up on all four legs and ready to go home. It seemed like a miracle.
A simple solution is to use preventive flea and tick products for your cats and insecticides for the environment to help exterminate fleas.
An ounce of prevention is much more affordable than a pound of cure. Here is how you can solve many of your cats itching and scratching problems. Visit the pet section of Tricia Deed at http://www.Infotrish.vpweb.com/ and review Home Remedies for Cats and Dogs.
