Cat tracking collars can be difficult to locate
Cat tracking collars seem like a smart choice to keep tabs on a wandering cat. Add to watch a string of global positioning device that knows its current location at all times. The GPS device may send out periodic its longitude and latitude in certain base station simply transmits it through the cell phone network. Once received, the location information is uploaded to a site website that allows you to monitor the location of your cat. Not only is this GPS tracking system is a good idea, is already used in a variety of ways - from systems car navigation to locate lost hikers.
However, the typical cat GPS tracking system is hard to find - at least in the States United States. The main problem is that GPS technology has not been reduced to the point of making GPS cat collars small enough and light enough for most domestic cats. Domestic cats are simply unable to withstand the weight of the current GPS electronics and power supply.
Web sites announcing only GPS tracking collars cat seems to be located in Europe, and especially the European devices are fairly large - weighing more than 90g. Most of medium-sized cats would only be able to wear a tracking collar 80 g comfortably.
The other downside to GPS tracking collars, and this goes for both cat tracking collars and dog tracking collars, is that GPS collars typically have monthly fees associated with them. This is because the GPS collars typically using cellular phone networks to transmit location information and cellular networks have monthly fees. So if you want to avoid monthly fees you have to use other technology to monitor the cat's collar.
One of the best options I've found is to use a short-range radio tracking necklace. This type of tracking collar transmits a periodic beacon signal is detected by a directional receiver. With the receiver is able to say in which direction your cat is so strong that a sign that they are detected. Also, when you approach the radio collar the beacon signal also gets stronger so you can determine both the direction and distance to your cat.
These collars of short-range radio tracking cat have two advantages over Cat GPS collars. First, because they use free radio frequencies to avoid the monthly cellular networks used by GPS systems. Secondly, the electronic used to these short-range devices can be as small and light enough to wear any domestic cat. The monitoring system in the neck just beacon a weak signal so the amount of electronics and power requirements are low. This type of monitoring and collars for cats only need a small battery currency of power.
There is a downside to using a radio tracking collar. Unlike GPS locators cats would not be able to identify the longitude and latitude your cat from the radio collar does not transmit any exact location coordinates - just the distance and directional information that can be detected through the signal strength in connection with the directional receiver. However, since cats usually do not wander miles away in a short space of time - my cats are usually within a block from my house - that has information about the exact location of the track on a website does not seem so important in my opinion.
The other perceived disadvantage a string of short-range radio location of cat is that it will not work over long distances compared to the GPS collar. That is only partly true. While a GPS collar that uses the cellular network may be able to transmit location information over a long distance, cellular network systems are also susceptible to loss interference and signal. If your cat is lost in a hole or a cave or an area that is not being served by a cellular tower, then the GPS collar would not work.
A string of short-range radio would be able to work much harder in remote areas and in places where cellular phone networks can not reach because radio collar is only to convey respect to the receiver, while the GPS cat collar needs to transmit to the nearest cell tower.
So considered a radio collar cat as a cat tracking device if you can not find a GPS cat collar that fits your needs and budget.
