Why does my male cat treat my female cat this way?

I have a male Burmese who hates other animals but is friendly to people. I rescued a female kitten who was out in the rain a few years ago, and he has finally found another animal he will accept. For the most part, there are no problems, but he will always go over to her and start licking her head and as soon as she closes her eyes and gets relaxed and starts enjoying it, he attacks her and bites her and chases her away (sometimes he's stealing a cozy sleeping spot from her.) They're both fixed so I don't think it has anything to do with mating. I can't understand why he does that Jekyll/Hyde thing with her all the time and how he switches so suddenly!

I've had cats for over 20 years. Male, female, young, old, this is how they play and negotiate who gets to be top cat. He's letting her know that he's the boss, but that's to be expected...he was there first.

As long as the "spats" aren't ending with her screaming and bloody, everything will be just fine!
