Have you ever had a dog that hated his bowl?
For some reason, my dog gets in weird moods and refuses to eat out of his bowl. I have an electronic feeder bowl, so it makes a weird noise when the dish inside moves to the open slot for him to get the food. Maybe this freaks him out, I dunno. Most of the time he will eat out of it, but then there are days when he will refuse to eat. If I sit him on my lap and hand feed him food from the bowl, he'll eat it. If I take the food out of the bowl and place it on the floor, he'll eat it. That's the way he eats it also. He takes each kibble of food out of the bowl, drops it on the floor, then eats it. What should I do here? I figured that he would like the weird noise from the automatic feeder because he would know that when he hears it there is food to eat...but I guess I was wrong. Any suggestions? I can't keep hand feeding him.
My dog, who is now 3 years old, does the same thing with his bowl. And he doesn't only not eat, he will also cry and whine and push it around the floor. And he tries to bury it with his toys. When I first got him as a puppy I was concerned about him not eating enough and also resorted to feeding him out of my hand. I tried switching his bowls (never an automatic feeder though) and that didn't help at all. I have no idea why he does it. He is actually finally kind of out-growing it, and usually eats on a daily basis now.
If your automatic feeder is new, it does kind of sound like you should try a new bowl. Or, if you are feeding him new food, he may not like it. Or, if you're feeding him the same food, he may want something new. My experience with dogs - they are all different!!
