Abyssinian Cat Rescue
What kind of cat should I get? (I would prefer a kitten.)?
If anyone else asked this I would immediately tell them to go to an animal shelter and personality is better than breed, but I badly would love to have a kitten rather than a cat. Unfortunately, I have been to the local animal shelter and several others outside of my city and there aren't any kittens there. And I'm NOT buying from a pet store. I don't support kitten mills.
Anyway, I've heard that abyssinian cats are playful, bright and vocal throughout their life and that kind of cat is one I desperately like. The thing is that I've read everywhere that they need a partner cat if their owner has a job and I'm afraid that I can't exactly deal with two boisterous kittens. (I have a job but when I get the cat, I would get it over the summer so that I have a lot of time to spend with it.)
Anyway, are there any particular bright breeds that aren't hairless that would suit me or should I rescue a pound cat and just hope it gets pregnant?
"Rescue a pound cat and hope it gets pregnant"? So you think shelters just hand out cats unaltered and hope you let them breed? HELLO!!!!! Shelters don't adopt animals until AFTER they've been spayed/neutered. What sense would it make if they handed you a cat that can breed? That's like promoting gun control and then handing out free guns!
Wait till Springtime. Shelters will be OVERFLOWING with kittens then. Many will go right to the "back room" to be immediately since the shelters just don't have any more room or money to care for them.
Personality isn't determined by breed. Nor can you even have a clue of the adult personality of a cat when you get as a kitten. A friendly, playful kitten can grow into a non-playful, unfriendly adult cat.
Why don't you adopt an adult cat? I have three that I adopted when they were all 2 1/2 to 4 years old and they're all the sweetest, most loveable and most playful cats I've ever known - far more than ANY cat I've had since it was a kitten! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=g-KOqD9YPbU You'd also possibly be saving the animal's life since most people stupidly pick kittens over cats.
