A P.S.A. (Pet Service Announcement)

It makes me really sad to make posts like my last few, so I want to take this moment to stress how absolutely important it is that you spay and neuter your cats and dogs and ferrets and rabbits and so on and so forth. (Yes, it's not just cats and dogs that end up in shelters.)

An estimated 4 to 6 million cats and dogs are put to death each year, and millions more are homeless. That's an incomprehensible number of lost lives! More statistics are available on the Spay Day USA site. The Humane Society has a good FAQ about animal population control.

If you're worried about the cost of spaying or neutering your pet, check around in your area. There are various groups and vets that will offer low-cost operations or accept vouchers donated by other organizations. The Austin Humane Society offers vouchers for $25 towards spaying/neutering your pets, and they are accepted by more than 40 veterinarians and clinics in the area!

FYI- Mom highly recommends Northwest Hills Pet Clinic! I've been there several times, as have others in our little family, and they have always been vey kind and caring. They also had one of the lowest spay/neuter fees out of the half-dozen clinics Mom called, which is a real concern when you have to neuter a dozen kitties.

I have more links to information and resources for controlling pet population listed here.

Please, do the right thing, and spay/neuter all your pets. The brief discomfort it causes us is more than balanced by preventing the births of unwanted animals who could just end up homeless or killed.

Plus, you'll get huge Karma points and lots of furry gratitude.

Shelter closing, 40 cats and kittens need homes!

This was also posted to a local mailing list:
ALLEYCAT RESCUE CATS NEED HELP
The caretaker of AlleyCat Adoptions (also known as AlleyCat Rescue) in Elgin, Texas, has become ill which has resulted in the closing of the organization.

There are about 40 cats from the age of 6 months to 8 years who need help. Some of these little guys have been born in the shelter and don't know what a real home is! Most of them are sweet, loving and ready to go. Others need a little "TLC." It breaks our heart to close, but slumping adoptions, and lack of money have not helped. If anyone can foster or help find permanent indoor homes, please call or e-mail me. The shelter is closing in two months, so any help would be a blessing.

God Bless.

These puppies also need help, TODAY!
[Town Lake Animal Center in Austin, Tx]
These dogs were posted on Saturday 1/5/02. Their deadline was tomorrow/Thursday and I just can't bear it, so I am extending them one day-if anyone can help any of these sweet dogs please contact the rescue office asap.

Dogs in Need of Rescue From TLAC:

Pen 184, # 248392 Sally, is a sweet black Border Collie/Spaniel mix. She is about 40 pounds and very friendly. Sally would normally go into our adoption program but she has a broken leg and we can't treat her properly here. TLAC will work with groups toward her medical expenses if anyone can help this great girl. Please visit her at: http://malford.ci.austin.tx.us/tlac/photo/A248392.jpg

Pen 191, # 248605, Lily is another sweet girl. She is also a border collie/spaniel mix, about 1 year old and 35 pounds. This girl was turned in by her [guardians] that had her for a month. They named her "Freak" which is pretty horrid, stupid, insensitive, should I go on?

They said she "freaked out" around people. Of course they kept her outside all the time too. So, she just needs some love and socialization. She has warmed up nicely since her stay here, but will not work out in our adoption program. I have renamed her Lily, which I think suits her much better.

Lily's photo is available, keep in mind that she was really scared when the photo was taken: http://malford.ci.austin.tx.us/tlac/photo/A248605.jpg

Pen 192 , # 248600 Gordie is a 9 month old mastiff/lab mix. He weighs about 45 pounds right now. Gordie is quite regal and calm, as you can see from his photo. He came in as a stray and no one has come for him. He also needs rescue to get out TLAC alive. His photo:

All of the above animals have firm deadlines of Thursday January 10th-; . Extended until Friday 1/11/02 5 pm.

Rescue Groups, please contact the rescue office via email or phone 512-972-6099.

Adoption interest, please visit Town Lake Animal Center during business hours, 11:30-7 weekdays, 1130-5 weekends.

Thanks for helping the animals at TLAC.

Can you help this puppy?

From a mailing list:
[Town Lake Animal Center in Austin, Tx]
Pen 103, # 249057 is a sweet young approximately 9 month old female Lab/Pit mix. This girl had the bad luck to be given as a gift. The recipients of this "gift" were so impressed by this that they named her "Retard". Then they turned around and surrendered her to a kill shelter.

She was not selected for adoption and will need rescue to get out of the shelter alive. She is friendly and social and smart. Her deadline for interest in order to get out alive is Saturday 1/12/02, by noon. The shelter closes at 5 on Saturday and Sunday.

By the way: This is a good example of how giving a loving sentient being as a gift (like property) is a bad idea all around. This girl has certainly suffered because of that cavalier attitude. Please contact the rescue office by email or phone 512-972-6099 if you can help this girl.

Thanks for all you do.

In my last post, I mentioned that one last kitten needs to be adopted. That would be little Velcro. So if anyone around Austin would like a sweet, loving, slightly shy kitty, please contact my Mom.

And, if you're a regular reader of my site and wondering how we jumped from four kittens needing a home to one, well, blame it on Dad. When Mom was arranging for someone to come out to see Bailey, he decided he just couldn't bear to part with that little sweetheart, nor with the funny Little Bitcher. At least not until they can move in with Uncle Adam. So, our kitty family has grown by two.

Mom and Dad would love to have kept all of my nephews, but that was just too many kitties for one house, and this way, our little ones are getting to spread love to other families.

And then there was one...

...one last kitten that needs a home, that is. Tonight a young man came by to meet the family. After a little while, Stain demanded exclusive petting rights, so the man decided to take him home.

Goodbye, little one! We will miss you!
